Rooms are not modern but fit in with the general ambience of the building with its original stonework and beams. Modernisation would spoil this oldy world charm. Breakfast which was included has continental with full English available also. If eating in the bar of restaurant on an evening bring your appetite. Great menu choices and very large portions at a reasonable price. I have to commend one gentleman who may actually br the owner. As I took ill on the first night and he went out of his way to ensure I was okay which thankfully I was by next morning.

The quality of breakfast is good. The food is very good. The steaks are brilliant, properly cooked to how you want it and the chips are proper "old-fashioned" chips and so good. Beautiful old building with creaky floors and it's very charming. Lovely, soft carpeting in the rooms. Good shower. Good wifi. The staff are always great.
I'm just being picky, just a couple of very minor quibbles, and it would not stop us staying again. Whilst the rooms are very nice, we would have liked there to have been luxury rooms available. Maybe with a king-size bed and comfier chairs or sofa to sit on. I know by the nature of the building and its structure, this might not be possible. We would have paid more. Maybe more toiletries. This is obviously not the hotel staff's fault in anyway, but it just would have been nice for the option. The toilets aren't very private due to the type of glass in the door. It's frosted glass, but with a clear rim. It would be nice to have some higher-end wines to complement the brilliant food in the restaurant.

Enjoyed our stay at Dun Cow good selection of ales and food, bed room was ok beds were a little slender, but comfy. Location had easy access to motorway and surrounding villages. Lovely old property with character staff were ok always smiling nothing was too much for them. Extremely helpful.
Lack of tables our own fault really should have booked a table for the Saturday night, it does get very very busy. The beds were around 3' wide so difficult to get comfy although slept ok we were in a twin room. Bathroom was a little cramped but manageable.

As always a very good visit - made welcome and it was very good overall. This is a small former coaching inn with rooms and not a bland big box hotel - it is an older building which has been modernised in keeping with its location and former use. Therefore if you expect modern then this is not for you. It has a charm and ambience of its own, I have used this hotel at least once a year for the past 30 year and never had a bad experience.
Sometimes the parking can be a little difficult, but that is just a factor of limited space rather than a fault of the actual hotel.

Terrific Staff who created great atmosphere during our stay. The staff were good but the food was outstanding. Great menu, beautiful presentation and very generous. They even put on special ingredient for our breakfasts. What a pleasure to have stayed here!
Once the carpets have been replaced it will make visitors feel a great deal more comfortable. Other attention to detail at zero cost would improve things no end. (squeaky hinges loose locks cracked window) just needs a bit of TLC

Stopped for a couple of nights as part of a day spent at Sedgefield races (20 mins walk) and a morning spent walking round Hardwick Hall (short drive), then onto the Auckland Project which was less than 30 mins drive away. Plenty of parking either onsite or surrounding roads. Staff were excellent, well kept beer (Taylor's) and exceptional food (braised steak) at breakfast and dinner. Rooms are small but absolutely fine.

The location was great for going to Sedgefield races. When we arrived, the young man at the reception helped us get a lift to the races as there were no taxis, which was very kind of him. Other members of staff who were also very nice & helpful are Richard the lady serving the breakfast & the chef. Breakfast was really good. We would definitely stay there again.

Large english breakfast included in the price and for £80 a night you cant go wrong. The interior of the dun cow inn has not changed for over forty years, some people say its dated, well for me the lack of updating just adds to the charm. Traditional food ,friendly staff and a great selection of cask beers. Before checking in we ate lunch, gammon for me (recommended) steak pie for my wife + a pint of Timothy Taylors an a Lime and Soda for £40...... perfect! Oh and our room was spotless.
nothing.

Exceptional breakfast, prompt service with a smile on a hot plate. Location was ideal as we were visiting friends in Peterlee. Dinner in the restaurant was superb, staff went above and beyond to please
Booked twin room on check in room was made up as double, i5 was late so we re- arranged room ourselves but more attention to our original booking details would have been appreciated.

Quaint little inn located in the centre of a small town. Staff were exceptionally friendly, so typical of the north east. Breakfast was plentiful and because it’s a small inn, the restaurant was peaceful.
Disappointed to arrive and find the restaurant was already fully booked and couldn’t accommodate us for dinner. There is a car park but it’s tight so we parked on the side of the road. This was never a difficulty however and there is plenty of room in the village.
