Budget friendly cozy B&B style accomodation with room in Japanese style. Comfortable futon and quiet surrounding I had a good sleep. Accomodation and bathrooms were clean. View from the room is amazing from 2nd floor. Breakfast is basic self serve boiled eggs and toast with different types of juices, coffee and tea available. Walking distance to Takachiho tourist destination (around 15-20minute stroll). Free parking is available next to accomodation (3 car slots) and host was very nice to let our car parked a little longer after checkout (host speaks perfect English) which has made our trip more enjoyable at the location.

This older home has been lovingly maintained. We had a Japanese room with a private toilet and used the shared showers. Very comfortable and staff spoke excellent English and were very kind and helpful Breakfast was somewhat self-serve but adequate (hard boil eggs and toast with jam) plus coffee ( a real plus). We were able to sleep with the windows open, which was a nice break from all the air-con rooms. Parking was easy, close by, and free. Staff recommended we walk to the evening traditional dance performance at a temple - which we did - that made for a lovely evening.

Nice room with new attached bath. Simple breakfast included.
We had some difficulties finding the location as locals directed us to another ryokan on a hill. Somehow GPS was not showing the location correctly for a start. The small town has limited food choices after 5.30pm as many restaurants close by 5.30pm. So travellers on free n easy may not find food easily. Even restaurants in hotels turn you away as they only serve their own guests who booked dinner. No walk-in guests! Overall the ryokan is good for 1 nite stay as it's decent.

The breakfast was quaint and cozy. It's just toast and tea/coffee, but the jam, butter and honey combo were amazing. Also there are boiled eggs. Our room had its own bathroom and we loved it. Very comfortable stay. Location was perfect. We walked to the shrine to watch the yagura performance like 5 minutes away walking. Then we went to the gorge the next day, which was just a couple minute drive. The view from the room was beautiful!
Personally, I struggle to sleep on futons, but I still slept pretty solidly. My friend slept perfectly.

It was an exceptionally pleasant stay. I really wanted to go to Takachiho on my trip, of course also because of the gorge. Rooms in Takachiho were very rare, so I was very happy when I found this accommodation at a very fair price. And my expectations were far exceeded. A wonderful Japanese ryokan-style room with a great view and a very helpful host. The accommodation is only a 5-minute walk from Takachiho Gorge and Takachiho-jinja Shrine (the evening Kagura performance is highly recommended). The breakfast was fine. All in all a great place to stay.

The owner stays late til 9pm to wait for our check-in -> good service. The owner prepared coffee and tea at lounge, alongside a bookshelf of comics. Although the breakfast was simple with just boiled eggs and toasts (drinks: coffee, tea, orange juice, tomato juice). It was a pleasure to enjoy them in the mountains of Kyushu.
It was futon beds, so they were not thick enough for best comfort. It may cause back problems for some travelers.

This B&B was very comfortable, it just had a really nice relaxed vibe. The location is also great - it's off of the main street, but right next to Takachiho Shrine, the site of the nightly dance performance. The mountain view from my bathroom was incredible. I loved hanging out in the lounge area with all of the books! As other reviews said, the breakfast is very quaint, so it's good to be prepared for that.

Fantastic location. You can not get closer to the gorge than this! Rooms are basic but clean. We were able to get a private bathroom as we booked early. It's was very cold but the room had its own air conditioning for heating. The blankets were thick and kept us warn all night.
Common living was cold, but there are gas heaters you can turn on. And it was warm for breakfast.

I booked same-day for a last-minute trip, and everything went very smoothly. I had a clean, spacious Japanese-style room with a private toilet and shower/bath, and giant windows with a great mountain view. The host has very good English and pointed out the various tourist spots upon check-in. The included breakfast is nothing extravagant, but great for the price. There was free on-site parking (though the lot is a bit small), and I was able to leave my car for a few hours after check-out while exploring. It's in a nice central location, so you can walk right out to Takachiho Shrine (go see the Yokagura show at 8 pm! It'll put a lot of the town's iconography into context) and nearby shops (though any restaurants open later are in the main town a bit further away). One note is that while Takachiho Gorge is technically a 10-20 minute walk away, it's still advisable to go by car instead if possible - the walk is along winding mountain roads with cars squeezing through.
Nothing comes to mind

It is very close to the gorge and the shrine. The room contained a toilet and bath/shower and was quite cheap. Included a continental breakfast.
Not many restaurants were around or if they were they were closed. It’s accommodation for one night or younger people.
