We recently had the pleasure of staying at this wonderful hotel and had an outstanding experience. The breakfast was absolutely fantastic with a wide variety of options to choose from. The bed was incredibly comfortable and we slept well. The room was spotlessly clean and the housekeeping staff did an excellent job maintaining it throughout our stay. The shower was perfect with great water pressure and temperature, making for a refreshing experience each time. The hotel's location is ideal, with easy access to key attractions and nearby amenities. The facilities were also top-notch, including both pools and a sauna, which were perfect for unwinding after a busy day. The staff were all polite and friendly, ensuring we felt welcome from check-in to check-out. We highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a relaxing and comfortable stay.

We loved everything about this hotel! From the arrival where we were greeted with champagne to the wonderful food and bars offered within the hotel to the OUTSTANDING spa staff, we could not have had a better trip. We visited during a 3 day storm so we had plenty of time to use all of the hotel amenities and could not recommend them more. The rooms were spacious, had balconies (for those rare, clear moments) and had modern, clean bathrooms with luxurious showers. While I did not eat at the restaurant for dinner, 6 of our other friends did and absolutely raved about the food. The quality and value, coupled with excellent staff made for an amazing trip. Only a 5-minute walk from so many things to do in Old town and a 10-minute cab ride to the more commercialized, shopping area of town. We would only stay at the Castanheiro hotel again if we return.

Perfect location in the centre of Funchal, but very quiet surroundings. Wonderful breakfast with plenty of fresh food, also made on request. A lot of local fresh fruits. Extremely helpful personnel. Goncalo recommended us several places to eat and enjoy Funchal - all of them were just great for us. Well equipped spa. We also had a massage in the hotel. Good bar on the ground floor. We did not have time to enjoy the pool bar on the roof. We made a reservation for 2 nights, but finally we have stayed 7 nights. Unforgettable stay.

It was our third stay at this wonderful hotel and it never fails to impress. Housed in a beautiful historic building with a very stylish design, which I love, the hotel offers stunning rooms and increadibly friendly staff. We're welcomed with a glass of prosecco, what was very nice gesture. You can feel the attention to detail in every aspect, making guests feel truly cared for. The breakfast was delicious, with the option to order a la carte dishes and wide variety of local fruits, including passion fruits and figs. We had an unforgettable dinner at the Typographia restaurant, which provided an exceptional culinary experience. The rooftop pool is a perfect place to relax on sunbeds after exploring the island, offering breathtaking view of the Funchal skyline, also in the night. We will definately return! Can't wait!

The hotel was extremely clean and well kept,as well as the spa and the roofpool-those were really nice. The breakfast had a nice selection as well.

What I was missing was maybe a coffee machine in the room,which I have become accustomed to in the 4 star hotels. I was expecting the room to be a bit more spacious,but I guess this is difficult in the city hotels. The parking was a bit expensive as well,it would be nice if this was included.

The breakfast buffet was exceptional, the staff responsive and courteous. The front of house staff were welcoming and informative in terms of bus journeys / tours etc. The hotel is beautifully appointed, and despite the small upstairs terrace and pool we always managed to enjoy a sun lounger. The terrace bar was useful and prepared enjoyable lighter snacks. We enjoyed a complimentary upgrade to a suite - which was on 2 floors with beautiful wooden floors and a twin aspect bedroom, and 2 bathrooms.

Perhaps some electric mosquito deterrent in the courtyard dining area, despite repellant spray - they feasted on me. Sadly this drove us away from supper outside, although there was of course the indoor dining room, however there was no subtle lighting and it lacked atmosphere and ambience. Coming home !

This hotel is exceptional in many ways - the location is great, the food is amazing and the staff couldn't be more welcoming and helpful - can't wait to go back! Our room was large with a seating area and a walk in shower. The rooftop area was fantastic with the infinity pool and drinks and snacks service from the bar - great views!

There is nothing not to like about this hotel! From the moment we arrived and were offered a glass of madeira wine, we were hooked!

Loved the rooftop pool and hot tub, the sauna and steam rooms on the lower level, the fun furniture and decor throughout the common areas, the kind and helpful staff, the amazing breakfasts, and the location. In fact, we liked it so much that we forfeited a night at another hotel to return to Castanheiro for our final night in Funchal.

Not much...we loved it! My only suggestion is that someone could clean the plexiglass beside the outdoor pool so that swimmers could better enjoy the view.

Amazing breakfast - there was nothing missing. Engaging staff, polite and ever so helpful. Hotel location is right in the centre of town. Hotel is clean and well decorated. Pools, sauna are all in really good conditions. Room was amazing with great views, bed was super comfy - could not have asked for me.

Breakfast was excellent, pool was small but pretty rooftop setting, staff were super helpful, lots of returning customers, room was quiet, Easter Sunday fine dining meal was super and great value.

Breakfast was missing options that weren't unhealthy fat types or the types of carbs that don’t trigger blood sugar, e.g. no fish, no avocado, limited nuts / seeds. Lots of fruit and “full English” options.
