Location was fabulous as was value for money and quirkiness. It was super clean despite being so old (so areas don't necessarily look clean but they are) and difficult to clean (all respect to the cleaning team). Set up was great. Organised kitchen. Plenty of space to be sociable or private as desired. Also note: a new krishna Indian food place newly opened just around the corner with amazing selection of food for $9.99 a plate.
Only one issue: room doors were secure but door to shared bathroom between 2 rooms had a flimsy lock that could easily have been broken so I didn't feel comfortable about that. NB WiFi is 1gb free each 24 hours not unlimited as booking.com states. This wasn't an issue for me but FYI, in case it is for you.

We always book here when coming to Wellington because it is excellent value for money and it is very conveniently located. The swipe cards, which you have to use to access the various levels, make for good security. A solo traveller would feel safe here. Fresh towels, etc, were provided each day. The bathroom facilities were cleaned ,rubbish emptied, and more sachets of tea, coffee, and chocolate provided.. The atmosphere is relaxed, and the staff we encountered were pleasant.
I like that it's a grand old building, but I think the kitchen area needs a revamp.. . A small fridge in the "superior" rooms would be invaluable.

The single room was absolutely adequate for my needs and the bathroom had been renovated! The bed was quite comfortable and I had a TV and a kettle. The staff are very helpful and I could leave my bag in a locker before I checked in. The Duke of Wellington Bistro alongside is very nice too! The location is perfect for working at the National Library, shopping, restaurants and train/bus station!
The old window was a bit draughty with the stormy weather and the heater didn't work in the room although the hotel was warm in the corridors. The wifi didn't work in my room but I could bluetooth via my phone.

The facilities were great. Kitchen for everyone to use and it was great seeing many families as well as backpackers cooking full meals. Fridge storage and many ovens and cooktops. Dining area was large. Bed was comfortable and shower was great. Walking distance to heaps of the attractions the wharf and Cuba St . Room was quite small, bed against the wall, but it was comfortable.
Parking situation. We had to park a block away at $25 per day. I wish this had been communicated prior to arrival as we entered the Wilsons Carpark next door which had minimal public parking bays available as they were all reserved for the offices next door . We went into the hotel to ask what was the best way to park. They told us that the hotel had an arrangement with another parking group , Prime and that we were better off parking there. All a bit overwhelming on arrival. I would stay again and be more prepared but easier if a hotel has its own parking if you have a car.

Basic but cosy room in a laid back backpackers. Own bathroom.Towel and linen provided. Microwave and tea making facilities, plus a plate and cutlery for basic meals if you don't want to share a kitchen. Big kitchen and lounge etc on a different floor to the rooms, which makes it much quieter. Location fantastic, as right opposite the train/coach/bus station and no hill to climb with your case. Cross the road and you're at the bluebridge ferry terminal to go south or a shuttle at the train station takes you to the interislander ferry terminal. Walk along the coastline for a choice of restaurants, then eventually you get to te papa museum and the big supermarket. Or walk through the buzzing city. Good value for money.
Nothing to complain about

It's hard to find a room at this price in Wellington anymore. It's probably one of the cheapest, so you need to adjust your expectations accordingly. It's an ancient building, and the decor and plumbing reflect it. That said, the mattress was great, I was warm, and the bathroom was convenient with plentiful hot water. It was also super close to my work location, so I was very happy. It's great having a basin in the room but I really missed having a jug and basic tea/coffee facilities in the room.
Bit dirty and lots of cracked and broken things.

The hostel is nice , our private room was pretty good , was more than what I was expecting for be honest . The only thing is that the shower have more water outside than inside and the mattress is a little bit old I think bc you fell inside of it but the room was pretty nice .
I will suggest to have more staff at the reception on their rush hour for example during the morning . I waited long when I saw that were two people inside the reception and only one was helping the customer , the other men was just sitting looking at the computer instead of help the line of customers that was waiting . At some point I just asked what I needed to know because the staff was taking too long helping another customer.

The location is supreme. It is so easy to access to railway station, buses and taxi. AX bus direct travel between airport and the accommodation. The room is spacious, it would be bonus if provide a desk or a table. Booked 2 single rooms with shared bathroom, end up 2 single rooms and have bathroom only shared between the guests from the 2 rooms. Independent sinks for each room. Kitchen has hot water tank provide immediate hot water. Metal benchtops are very useful, can put hot pots and pans on, and easy to clean. And there are sufficient number of them for guests to use. Comfortable and sufficient space at dinning area.
Expect the blanket is warmer, or another extra piece. Or the heater able to set by the guest, current it is not on. The wind getting through the hotel building can be very noisy during windy day. The bathroom shower tap hard to adjust the right water temperature, either too hot or too cold. The bed is a bit soft, but overall decent comfort. The bed sheet from day 1 has lots of stain, but didn't see this after. If there is another kitchen that will be idea, some times there were too many guests using it. kitchen equipment aren't sufficient, running out of pans, knife, fork quite easy. If there is kitchen towel instead of cloths it would be bonus.

Outstanding location, Best value for money; supervreasonable in the centre of all transport services and the closest accom to the Stadium; ferry; trains and intercity buses. Staff are extremely helpful; free lockers (even on the day you check out!) It's an old hotel, expect it to be that. Comfortable, warm, free wifi daily (1GB) and a must for anyone looking for budget accom. Thank you Waterloo Hotel and Backpackers.

I have stayed here several times before in a private room and it is excellent value for money and a great location. It has everything I needed and was basic but clean. Check in and out was simple. I love some of the original features of this accommodation
Nothing. My room this time was smaller than rooms I’ve stayed in previous but I had a view of the sea from my window so it was fine. I would have needed more crockery in the room if I had stayed longer but I could have gone to the kitchen for them.
