I had the pleasure of spending 3 nights at Ikkoten with my three children, and our stay was nothing short of perfection. We were originally going to stay as a family of 5 at the KAI Yufuin but when an important business trip took my husband out of the vacation we had to quickly pivot because my ten year old son wouldn’t have been able to use the hot springs alone there. The reservable family onsen as well as our private indoor/outdoor onsen (we stayed in Kyara) allowed him to have as wonderful an experience as the girls and I. While the family onsen is great, we loved the convenience and privacy of our private one so much that we ended up using the family onsen only once. Notably, this is not a part of Japan where there’s a ton of English spoken, but the staff at Ikkoten had excellent English, which was super helpful for us as American visitors. They were super accommodating of the kids and provided samue (pajamas that are also worn to meals), geta (wooden sandals), and slippers in multiple sizes. The grounds are beautiful - a back drop of tall seeene forest (you can always here the serene sound of wind rushing through the leaves and pine needles), mountains at Mt Yufu on the other sides, and then a beautiful manicured garden. Our late March stay marked the beginnings of all kinds of blooms, and just standing outside you’d catch the perfumed scent of all kinds of beautiful flowers. The meals were absolutely incredible. The kids got wonderful multi-course meals of rice and tempura and miso soup (with a little bit of new and interesting dishes to try too). My 12 year old daughter was considered an adult by the resort, but when I requested kids meals for her, they were happy to pivot after 24 hours (the kaiseki meals were just too much for her 40kg frame!!). But those kaiseki meals were truly scrumptious. When booking the property for multiple nights, I hadn’t realized how overwhelming they could be, and I swear I gained like 10lbs just in those 3 days alone!!

This is a beautiful resort with individual house that comes with private onsen. In addition, we can book the family onsen which is well equipped and bigger. It has indoor and outdoor onsen. Amenties were plenty with free beverages, facial product including masks. The keisenki dinner and breakfast were awesome, worthy of michelin star. The service rendered by the staff was excellent. Very hardworking and energetic staff, you see them carrying your luggage, clean your house and serve your food.
Bedroom is abit tight for 3 pax. The house is traditional setup, hard on moving around for those with weak knees

The environment was incredibly beautiful, nestled among the mountains and forests, very peaceful, with views of Mt. Yufudake. The staff were extremely courteous, friendly, and professional. The room was beautiful and comfortable, and the private bath was also very relaxing, with scenic views. The room was well-stocked with beverages, and the most pleasant surprise was the record player. The family bath was also very comfortable, and the outdoor bath offered splendid views. The meals were very tasty and exquisite. There was a bar, and the drinks on the menu were very good, but the bartender was talented and could mix drinks not listed on the menu, which was a pleasant surprise. Additionally, there was a library at this place, equipped with books and CDs, and a variety of drinks were also provided.
The portion size for dinner was a bit small...

Lovely place with a view of the mountains. The 8 course dinner was not only beautifully presented but also very delicious. The private onsen with windows open to the forest was truly relaxing and just what we needed on a windy November day.. The staff are friendly and helpful. Marina (I think that was her western name) was very cute, she used a translator app on her phone to communicate with us. I would definitely recommend this Ryokan.

The facility and service. They do help me to reserve the restaurant around which is an extra service. The staff are very good in English to service us. Execllence experience!
Indeed the display photos in booking.com is worse than that when I see it in the reality. Hope the new photos can be updated to attract more tourists.

Location is good, very near to shopping area. Hotel staff are very helpful, and the food is delicious. Food portion is big and we are all very content after every meal.
The room lighting is a bit dim.

The private onsen in our villa and the family bath of course. The area is surrounded by mountains, which make my family and I feel super relax.
Our villa has 2 floors. Bedroom on 2nd floor. If the group includes elderly (like my father), this might be a consideration.

The lovely Ryokan is nestled in the mountains with beautiful scenery and views of the changing colours of the mountains, clouds and sky at different times of the day. Enjoyed the private onsen with forest views and the public open-air onsen with mountain views.

The atmosphere of this Ryoken was amazing. The staff, food, and private bath were 10/10. My wife and I are vegetarians, so food was abit difficult to coordinate. At the end, we only had breakfast(vegetarian) and had to skip dinner. In spit of that though we will most definitely visit again.
Nothing really

Very very beautiful ryokan! Our group thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We had half board and the meals were impeccable- delicious and very pretty presentation. The private bath in the rooms was soothing, overlooking the forest.
